Do I need a backflow test in Portland?
The 60-second answer: you need an annual backflow test if your property has a backflow prevention assembly. Here's how to tell whether yours does.
You almost certainly need a test if…
- The Portland Water Bureau (or your local water provider) sent you a notice — that means an assembly is already on record for your address.
- You have an in-ground sprinkler or irrigation system — even one you never use.
- You have a fire sprinkler system.
- You have a pool or pond auto-fill line, a boiler with chemical treatment, or other equipment plumbed to the water supply.
- It's a commercial property — see commercial requirements.
You probably don't if…
A typical home with no irrigation system, no fire sprinklers, and none of the equipment above usually has no backflow assembly and no testing requirement. Hose-bib vacuum breakers (the little screw-on fittings on outdoor faucets) are not testable assemblies and don't trigger annual testing.
If you're still not sure
Walk the property and look for the assembly — usually where the irrigation line meets the water supply. Or contact the Portland Water Bureau and ask what's on record for your address. If the answer turns out to be yes, the test is quick: roughly $50–150 and 15–30 minutes.
